A Bennettsville crime report printed on April 2, 2026, stating the arrest of Richard Miller and Michael Staub was printed in error. While Miller and Staub were both charged with Assault in the Third Degree, they were not arrested as reported.
May 3
At approximately 8:23 p.m., officers responded to a residence on Wells Street following a report of communicated threats. At the scene, officers spoke with a female who said she recently split with her husband, and he found out she is talking with another male. Not taking this news well, an argument ensued resulting in the female ending the conversation with her husband. However, a short time later, the woman spoke with her son who claimed the husband was on his way to her house. She called her husband and advised him not to come to her home, but he insisted that he was still on his way and that if she called law enforcement “it would be over” and he “would drive his car through her home.” The female said she hung up her phone and blocked her husband’s number. Case is active.
At approximately 12:44 p.m., units responded to the Quality Inn in reference to a reported dispute and larceny. Prior to arriving, dispatch informed officers a male subject stated a female took his cell phone and left the Quality Inn with it. As officers arrived on scene, they noted observing the reported getaway vehicle leaving the lot, then abruptly turning back in to the parking lot. At the scene, officers spoke with the male caller who said he had just returned to the hotel when a female took his cell phone. The male stated he told the female he was calling law enforcement, and it was at this time the female decided to get in the vehicle and drive away, before thinking better of her decision and returning to the Quality Inn. When asked, the female denied being in possession of the male subject’s cell phone, and the female gave consent for law enforcement to search her vehicle and the room she had been staying in at the Quality Inn. A search did not turn up the male subject’s missing cell phone, valued at $800. Case is active.
May 4
At Approximately 8:15 p.m., law enforcement responded to a residence on Cheraw Street in reference to a domestic dispute. At the scene, officers learned a husband and wife who are currently separated and living in different households, got into a verbal dispute when the wife came by the husband’s home wanting some photographs returned. The husband allowed her to remove the photographs she wanted and some other items in a claimed effort to keep the peace, however, his wife had other ideas, becoming angry and physical. According to the husband, his wife appeared agitated and belligerent during her visit, which culminated in her taking a shopping cart and launching it at her husband’s car, causing a valued $800 in damage. Officers advised the husband that as the vehicle is legally considered “marital property” no damages could be sought at this time. Law enforcement did suggest the husband might wish to pursue a no contact order and a divorce attorney. Case is active.
At approximately 2:21 p.m., officers responded to a residence on Oakwood Street in reference to reported fraud. At the scene, the victim said she purchased two Apple gift cards from Walmart in Bennettsville and when she got home and opened the packages, she noticed the card’s unique identifying coding was scratched out on both gift cards. The victim said she was unsure if the cashier was responsible or if the action was committed prior to her purchase of the cards. The victim was able to provide officers with a receipt. Law enforcement advised the victim to contact Apple customer service before officers headed over to Walmart to attempt contact with the cashier. Case is active.
