BENNETTSVILLE — The atmosphere inside OTF Fitness Center was electric as high school athletes from multiple programs gathered to test their strength in two of the most demanding lifts in competitive training: the Bench Press and Power Clean. Each athlete stepped onto the platform with one goal — to show their maximum strength and represent their school, their team, and their community with pride.

This was the first-ever OTF Powerhouse Showdown, and it delivered everything its name promised: intensity, excitement, and a showcase of the next generation of strength athletes.

One of the most powerful storylines of the event was the return of Dean Boyd, former Marlboro County High School Athletic Director and head football coach. Now leading York Comprehensive High School in York County, Coach Boyd brought his athletes to Bennettsville to compete in the Showdown — a gesture that spoke volumes about his continued respect for the community and his belief in the mission of OTF.

His presence added a layer of history and connection to the event. Seeing Coach Boyd back in the building, this time supporting a new wave of athletes, created a moment that resonated with everyone in attendance.

The competition itself was nothing short of thrilling. Athletes from different schools — along with OTF’s own group of developing lifters representing Marlboro County — stepped up to the bar with determination etched across their faces. Every rep, every clean, every press was met with cheers, encouragement, and the unmistakable pride of teammates and families watching from the crowd.

The Bench Press showcased raw upper-body power.

The Power Clean highlighted explosive athleticism and technique.

Together, they created a perfect stage for young competitors to shine.

To ensure fairness, professionalism, and credibility, OTF assembled a judging team with deep roots in strength, coaching, and athletic development:

• Kevin Kaga – Former MCHS strength coach, bringing technical expertise and a sharp eye for form.

• Joseph Murphy – Former MCHS football coach, offering leadership, discipline, and support for the athletes.

• Kenneth McFadden – Accomplished powerlifter whose experience elevated the standard of the event.

• Kelly Richardson – Bikini bodybuilder and fitness professional, adding precision and competitive insight.

Their combined presence not only legitimized the event but also showed the athletes that the community’s most respected figures were invested in their success.

OTF Athletes Step Into the Spotlight

One of the most inspiring elements of the Showdown was the participation of OTF’s own group of young athletes — a team built from the heart of Marlboro County and surrounding areas. These competitors represented more than a gym; they represented a movement. A belief that strength training can change lives, build confidence, and open doors.

Their performance proved that OTF is not just a facility — it’s a training ground for future champions.

What made the Powerhouse Showdown truly special was the unity it created. Athletes from different schools, backgrounds, and counties came together under one roof to compete, learn, and grow. Coaches reconnected. Former mentors returned. Families filled the gym with energy. And the athletes — the stars of the day — gave everything they had.

This event wasn’t just a competition.

It was a celebration of youth.

A celebration of strength.

A celebration of community.

The success of OTF’s first Powerhouse Showdown sets the stage for something bigger. With the support of former coaches, current leaders, and a community that believes in its youth, this meet is poised to become a staple event — one that athletes will look forward to year after year.

The bar has been set high.

The standard has been established.

And OTF has proven that with the right support and resources, it is ready to be an example in developing strong, confident, competitive young athletes.
