Bennettsville crime report May 23-May 26

May 23

At 3:52 a.m., officers responded to a residence on Winston Avenue following a report of a suspicious person. At the scene, officers spoke with the caller who said he observed three Black males standing in the vicinity of his son’s vehicle, a 2006 Mercedes-Benz, which was parked on private property in the back yard of the home and covered by a tarp. Searching the area, investigators were unable to locate any tracks from the perpetrators, evidence of trespass, or any individuals matching the provided eyewitness description of three Black males wearing all black clothing. The caller stated to officers that many of the lug nuts from the vehicle’s rims were missing. Case is active.

At 1:30 a.m., Sgt. J. Dew was out on patrol when he observed a dark in color Hyundai disregard a red traffic light, blowing straight through the intersection of Liberty Street and East Main Street, continuing to travel eastbound on East Main Street towards Cheraw Street, before coming to a sudden stop in front of a business on Cheraw Street. After stopping the vehicle, the driver exited the car. At this time, Sgt. Dew explained to the driver they were being pulled for a traffic violation, and when requested, the driver cooperated and returned to sitting behind the wheel of the vehicle. Cautiously approaching, Sgt. Dew requested the standard paperwork, and the driver was able to provide proof of insurance and registration for the vehicle, however, the driver was unable to produce a valid driver’s license. The name provided by the driver matched a known subject involved in a previous traffic accident, but without identification, Sgt. Dew was unable to confirm the driver’s involvement in the earlier traffic incident, and so he released the driver with a citation for disregarding a traffic control device. Case is active.

At 9:59 p.m., officers responded to a lodging facility on 15-401 Bypass following a report of a female making threats. At the scene, officers spoke with a male subject who identified himself as the caller. He stated to officers that his girlfriend came by his place of employment and made threatening statements towards him. According to the male, his ex-lover declared, “I’m going to finish the job.” He also told officers he and the female were previously involved in an incident that resulted in his suffering life threatening injuries, and for this reason, both parties were advised not to be within 100 ft. of each other. As a reminder of the court ordered enforced distance, the female in question is still wearing an ankle monitor in response of the incident, according to statements reportedly made by the male. Despite the ankle monitor, the female still managed to allegedly drive to his place of employment, arriving as he was exiting from a long day at work. The male stated it was at this time she made the threats he found so upsetting. The male stated his intention to speak with the solicitor’s office regarding his ex-lover’s threats against him and shared with officers the female is currently on probation with Marlboro County Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services (MCPPPS). Case is active.

At 1:25 a.m., officers responded to a residence on Fletcher Street following a report on someone actively attempting to enter the home. At the scene, officers learned from the female inside the home that her child’s father had come by and beat on her door and busted out her bedroom window. The female provided officers with an audio recording of the event, and officers noted hearing the window breaking though reported dialogue of the recording was mostly inaudible. As the male subject had already left the scene when officers arrived, law enforcement traveled further down Fletcher Street to speak with the male’s mother, who said he was not at the home, and she had not recently seen him. The female was advised to call 911 should the male return. Officers took pictures of the scene and filed a report. Case is active.

May 24

At 3:16 p.m., officers responded to a residence on Parsonage Street in response to a stolen bicycle. At the scene, officers spoke with the reporting caller who said someone came along and relieved him of his bicycle he had tied to a trashcan inside his yard. The victim said he last saw the bicycle on the night of May 23. Having just returned to the location on Parsonage Street, he only just noticed his bike missing. A female occupant of the home said she last saw the bicycle early Sunday morning. The victim stated to officers this was the second time his bike had been stolen. The victim described his prized bicycle as a Murry 29”, with green rims and black and white tires, valued at $250. Case is active.

May 25

At 4:49 p.m., officers were dropping off paperwork related to another case at a business located on Highway 15-401 when they were notified by management that a Black male had just walked into the store and shoplifted. Management provided officers with security footage of the incident, which showed a male walk into the store, head straight to the meat department, grab two family sized packs of steak, valued at $59, and then head down a nearby aisle where he attempted to surreptitiously stuff the meat down his pants. Officers noted in reports that the store’s management and loss prevention teams were able to positively identify the meat thief from previous incidents. A warrant was taken out for the habitual offender’s arrest and the case is active.

May 26

At 2:12 a.m., officers responded to a residence on Northwood Drive following a report of an active break-in. At the scene, the caller said a juvenile who goes by the name “Joez” broke into his home, came into his bedroom and was going through the caller’s belongings when he awoke to find him there. According to the victim, after Joez noticed he was awake, he took off running from the residence. The caller added that after a few moments he made his way to his living room where he noticed the juvenile peering at him from the front door. When the male called the juvenile by name, he again took off running, according to the victim. Despite a thorough search by law enforcement, the juvenile was unable to be located. Case is active.
