LAURINBURG — Hospice of Scotland County raised more than $190,000 during its 40th annual golf tournament May 5-6 at Scotch Meadows Country Club, continuing a longtime fundraiser that supports hospice care for patients regardless of their ability to pay. Having two locations, one in Laurinburg, and most recently, one in Bennettsville located at 1039 Cheraw Street, all proceeds from the event are split between benefitting both locations. Opening in November 2025, the Bennettsville location serves the Marlboro, Dillon, and Chesterfield areas.
The tournament, which serves communities in Scotland and Marlboro counties, has raised more than $5 million over four decades. Organizers said the 2025 total exceeded last year’s by $14,842. The tournament drew 250 golfers and featured about 300 auction items, comprised of golf equipment, vacation packages, gift certificates, wine, artwork, apparel, and sports memorabilia.
This year’s event included two days of play, with golfers able to participate on either day or both. A Captain’s Choice format was offered, and participants had access to meals, refreshments, contests, a silent auction and the closing ceremony. Winners from each day were given custom golf grips at the Golf Pride Factory, as well as a round of golf at Pinehurst.
Other competitions held during the event included Hole-in-one contests (4 holes), closest to the pin, longest putt, and more, and “Putting for Cash” ($5,000 prize). Each day’s winning team scored a free round at Pinehurst No. 8 and additional rewards.
A cherished community event, the annual Hospice of Scotland County Golf Tournament combines golf and community engagement, with philanthropy and is 95% organized by volunteers. The tournament was sponsored by Eaton Golf, drew 250 golfers, and featured about 300 auction items, comprised of golf equipment, vacation packages, gift certificates, wine, artwork, apparel, and sports memorabilia.
A big deal for the non-profit organization, all proceeds raised from the annual event go directly to caring for patients and providing services for patients who otherwise might not be able to receive care due to a lack of medical insurance coverage. This year’s two-day event raised a total of $190, 695!
In developement for Hospice of Scotland County, Bailey Lindsay Hunter says this year was her first year working alongside the care team helping to plan and prepare for the event, and she could not be in more awe of the hard work, time, and careful consideration that went in to making the 40th annual tournament such a sucess.
“After seeing the execution of this huge fundraiser, I now understand why this golf tournament is celebrating its 40th year. There is so much local support that goes into this tournament and I absolutely could not believe the amount of volunteers and local sponsors that made this event possible,” Lindsay Hunter said. She continued, “We even had hospital staff coming out on their lunch breaks to say hello and place some silent auction bids. Attending and working this golf tournament was an absolute joy, and I cannot wait for year 41.”
Organizers also recognized sponsors in platinum, diamond, gold, silver and bronze categories. Tuesday’s winners were John Holder, Mark Konyers, Bennett Gardner and Mike Davis. Wednesday’s winners were Becca Welker, Joel Hartwell, Thomas Welker and Burt Dean.
The two-day event closed with the Lawson’s Gift raffle, donated by the McCabe family in memory of Lawson McCabe, followed by a live auction. Music was provided by The Jim Morgan Jazz Group throughout the tournament.
