Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Shaquite Pegues to the Northeastern Technical College Area Commission at the recommendation of the Marlboro County Legislative Delegation. The Area Commission is the governing body for Northeastern Technical College and Pegues will join the ranks of leaders from across the Pee Dee to support NETC moving forward. Pegues brings unique skills and experiences to the appointment and is ready to get to work.
Pegues is a native of Bennettsville. SC, and a product of Marlboro County schools. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Spelman College – Atlanta, GA (Child Development), and her master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University – Fort Lauderdale, FL (Management and Administration of Educational Programs). She is a licensed educator with certifications in PreK-5 education and English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Pegues has work with the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) for the past 15 years and currently serves as the Managing Director for the CDF Freedom Schools Program. In this role, she oversees the day-to-day operations of the national program, which teamed up with 128 organizations, reaching over 11,000 children and youth across 191 program sites nationwide in 2023. Locally, Pegues oversees the CDF Freedom Schools summer and after school programs provided to Marlboro County students.
Pegues also serves the local community in several capacities. She is the president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter, a Southeast Region Delegate for the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College, the Executive Committeewoman for the Marlboro County Democratic Party, a South Carolina Ports Authority Ambassador, a graduate of South Carolina Afterschool Leaders Empowered (SCALE), an advisor for Tea Time with Teens, and a member of the NAACP.
Recently, Pegues was selected to join 47 other South Carolina leaders as a part of The Riley Institute at Furman University’s Diversity Leaders Initiative. Through this program, leaders are equipped with skills to leverage diversity in their organizations in ways that drive social and economic progress in South Carolina. Pegues has received several awards for her leadership and work with children/families, but none greater than the honor of working with the Children’s Defense Fund to level the playing field for children.
