MCCOLL — Following the abrupt departure of former McColl Police Chief Charles English, who cited safety concerns, the town of McColl has filled this vacancy by hiring Chief Jonathan Beggs.
Beggs is bringing to McColl a plethora of law enforcement experience, despite being terminated from two Pee Dee law enforcement agencies, the Chesterfield County Detention Center on August 12, 2016 and also from the Bennettville Police Department on June 28, 2017, according to training records from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
Since beginning his career at the Marlboro County Detention Center in October 2013, Beggs has found employment with several law enforcement agencies, serving 14 stints over the 13 year period. Some highlights from his impressive resume include Marlboro County [October 2013 until July 2014] and Chesterfield County Detention Centers [April 2016 until August 2016] , as well as four stints with the Bennettsville Police Department, Clio Police Department [September 2020 until January 2023] and he even served the Georgetown Police Department from October 2024 until December 2024.
Most recently, Beggs was employed with the Chesterfield Police Department from January 2026 until February 2026.
Beggs was previously with the McColl Police Department from May 2018 until June 2020. He was sworn in as chief on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Attempts to reach McColl Police Chief Jonathan Beggs for comment have gone unreturned.
