BENNETTSVILLE — Members of the Sawmill Missionary Baptist Church sponsored their Black History Program Sunday, February 22, 2026.
This year, participants presented readings showcasing the achievements and contributions of African American leaders, and words that describe their impact. Mistress of ceremony was Mrs. Linda Calhoun. The program highlights included scripture read by Mrs. Carrie Ash, and prayer by Deacon Levern Miles. The congregation joined in a responsive litany in celebration of Black History. Mrs. Betty Littles delivered an informative presentation on the church’s history.
“A Celebration of Black History and Excellence” opened with a welcome by Mrs. Valerie Moore, followed by a spotlight on the Civil Rights Movement that set the stage for the following presentations; Ms. Patty Brown – Advocate (John Lewis), Ms. Morgan Springle – Activist (Marian Wright Edelman), David Springle – Educator (Mary McLeod Bethune), JaQuez Little – Abolitionist (Fredrick Douglass), Addison Hersey – Courage (Rosa Parks), Mrs. Delores Lowery – Unity (Ella Baker), McKenzie Douglas – Freedom (Harriet Tubman), Shamyra Gee – Peace (Peaceful Protesters), Mr. Ronnie Moore – Equality (Dr. Martin L. King Jr.), and Alyssea Adams – Justice (Thurgood Marshall).
Mrs. Ruby McRae gave closing remarks that prepared participants to go down the aisles to the song, “Stand.” Mrs. Valerie Moore ended the program with the reading of a poem titled, “I Am Somebody” to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Musical selections were Lift Every Voice and Sing, Glory, Stand, and We Shall Overcome. Additional remarks were given by Pastor James J. Anderson. Ms. Hiltra Watson is Program Director, and Mrs. Linda Calhoun is Superintendent of Sunday School.
