Visual and Performing Arts Showcase displays local children’s artistic talent

For the first time, the visual and performing arts came together for Marlboro County School District.
The two-day showcase held on March 22-23 featured artwork and musical performances from various schools in the district.
Sandra Widejko, the gifted and talented arts coordinator for Marlboro County School District, thought the event was a tremendous success. Students had a chance to show family, friends and community members artwork during a reception at the Bennettsville Community Center.
Clio Elementary Middle School art teacher Whitney Hilburn said her only problem was having so much good artwork to pick from for the event.
"I didn't have enough space to showcase them," she said.
Her students had more than 50 art pieces in the show ranging from one-dimensional art to an underground railroad quilt with different panels and three-dimensional masks.
"I  hope the district will continue this," Hilburn said. "It is a good thing."
The next day was the Performing Arts Showcase with performances by McColl Middle School, School of Discovery Jazz Band, SOD Singers, SOD Dancers, Marlboro County High School Gold Rush and MCHS Jazz Band.
The winners of the Bennettsville Bicentennial art competition were K-2 - Janae Drea Williams, Bennettsville Primary School; 3-5 Ronsiyha Sewell, CEMS; 6-8 Malaka J. DuPree, SOD; and 9-12 Jace McCuna, MCHS.
Winners had to had a theme of buildings and landscapes.  They received $50 cash prizes.
