BENNETTSVILLE—More than 65 % of Marlboro County voters cast ballots in the 2024 General Election. In 2020, the total turnout was 63.05%.
Tuesday, Marlboro County elected a new sheriff, giving Larry McNeil another chance to lead the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement shared with the Herald-Advocate, McNeil thanked the community for its support.
“Please allow me to extend and offer my sincerest thankfulness to each and every one of you for your encouragement and unwavering support. To God be the glory for it all. To acknowledge any accomplishment as they were my own, would be boastful since they are a direct result of God’s plan. I humbly extend my sincerest appreciation to the citizens, who exercised their right to vote in our great county. To those who contributed to this campaign’s success over the past three years, enabling the Sheriff’s Office to achieve numerous milestones during our charge, I offer my heartfelt gratitude. The Deputies’ unwavering dedication, often at great personal risk, has been instrumental in serving our community. As we continue on this journey, we will persevere and continue to let God guide us, staying focused on our mission and understanding we have to bridge the gap of division created by this election to bring our community leaders and citizens together. The Bible tells us that we are all created equal and we must come together to accept His word to love our neighbor. To my family and my law enforcement family, I give you my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support throughout the many years of my career in law enforcement. With my interim appointment now behind me, I am excited that together we will move forward with the future of this county and office as our motivation. Please continue to pray for our county and the Sheriff’s Office. God bless us all.”
McNeil won 48.39% of the vote. He faced Charles English, who earned 2,842 votes, James Pauling, who garnered 168 votes and incumbent sheriff Charles Lemon, who launched a write in campaign in September, who garnered 2,141 votes.
Lemon was not on the ballot because, during the filing period, he was suspended and under federal indictment. Lemon was acquitted by a federal jury in August and Governor Henry McMaster reinstated him as sheriff.
In the race for State House Representative District 54, political newcomer Democrat Jason Luck won in Marlboro County by 53.39% over Republican Sterling McDiarmid. In the entire District 54, Luck won 52% of the vote and will take over the seat Representative Patricia Moore Henegan held for more than a decade.
In the race for State Senate District 29, Democrat incumbent Gerald Malloy lost his bid for reelection to Republican JD Chaplin.
Sharea Bracey won the County Treasurer’s race against Patricia English, garnering 51.19% of the vote.
