Nebraska is the safest state for trick-or-treaters, with 0.71 pedestrian traffic deaths per 100,000 population.

With children more than twice as likely to be hit by car on Halloween than any other day of the year, new data has revealed the states where trick-or-treaters are most likely to be struck down by a car this Halloween.

The research, conducted by personal injury experts Ladah Law Firm, collected data from the Governors Highway Safety Association on pedestrian traffic fatalities by state in 2023. The data was then calculated per capita to find the number of pedestrian traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents by state.

1. New Mexico – 4.69 pedestrian traffic fatalities per 100,000 people

With 99 pedestrian fatalities in 2023, New Mexico has the highest pedestrian fatality rate per capita in the U.S. Nationwide, 75% of pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas, and most happen after dark.

2. Florida – 3.49 fatalities per 100,000 people

Florida recorded 801 pedestrian casualties in 2023, making it one of the deadliest states for pedestrians, particularly in cities like Miami and Orlando, where both pedestrian traffic and vehicle congestion are high.

3. South Carolina – 3.46 fatalities per 100,000 people

With 182 fatalities in 2023, South Carolina ranks third in the nation. Nationwide, distracted driving was responsible for 3,308 fatalities in 2022.
