BENNETTSVILLE— Marlboro County School District superintendent Helana Tillar received a vote of confidence from the Marlboro County School District Board of Trustees at Monday’s board meeting.
Following an executive session where board members conducted the superintendent’s evaluation, Tillar’s salary was increased to $190,000 and given a 5% annuity. The board unanimously approved the increase.
Chairman Michael Coachman said, “Thank you Dr. Tillar, for bringing us to where we’ve come from. With the job you’ve done so far, we have all the confidence in the world that you’re going to continue to move us forward. Just know that the board will have your back in the future in all endeavors we have to go through to get our children to where they need to be.”
Tillar was rehired by the MCSD last year. Previously, she led the district for seven years from 2010 to 2017. During Tillar’s first tenure at the district, the graduation rate was 83%, right at the state average.
Since being back as superintendent, Tillar has reinstated the ninth-grade academy at the high school and worked on teacher retention.
Tillar thanked the members of the board for the vote of confidence. “I know that we are going to continue to do great things here, because this is home for me. So, I just thank y’all. It’s a joy for me.”
Council member Danny Driggers said as long as Marlboro County is moving forward, the board will 100% have Tillar’s back.
