BENNETTSVILLE— Sometimes, colleges don’t get to see the talent in rural counties like Marlboro, Chesterfield, Scotland and Robeson counties, but last Thursday, coaches Cory Johnson, Ryan Hunt, and Dennis McFatten made sure athletes from these areas and other rural counties got a chance to show off for colleges.
“This is a joint camp in Marlboro County, we’re trying to get under recruited areas, as far as the Pee Dee area, all the way up to Scotland County, we’re trying to get them more looks. We have 10 plus colleges out here tonight and we got 120 plus athletes. It’s a beautiful thing,” Johnson said.
McFatten said they’ve run various camps over the years and what makes what they do different from other camps is that the athletes learn new techniques that they can take back to their home schools.
“They can go to other camps, but I don’t think they get as much knowledge of what to do and different techniques,” he said. “We like to teach at our camps. When they come here, it’s 10-15 colleges here and we’re teaching them what colleges want to see.”
The colleges that were in attendance at Thursday’s camp were, UNC-Pembroke, Averett University, Newberry College, Fayetteville State University, St. Andrews University, Wesleyan College, and Allen University.
