BENNETTSVILLE—The Marlboro County School District Board of Trustees celebrated the achievements the Blenheim School of Discovery’s Junior Beta Club at Monday’s school board meeting.

The BMSD Jr. Beta Club showcased its unwavering dedication and exceptional talents at the recent State National Jr. Beta Club Convention held on January 17-19, 2024.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Spry, the Beta Sponsor, our students participated in 23 categories and secured remarkable success, placing in an impressive 17 out of 23 categories.

Mrs. Spry thanks the co-sponsors, Mrs. Genwright, Mrs. Heslop, and Mr. Edwards, for their invaluable commitment to the Beta Club. Special appreciation is also extended to Coach Mason, Ms. Mumford, the cafeteria staff, Ms. Covington, Ms. Cue, Miss Douglas, Ms. Covington, teachers, administration, Miss Stanely, Mr. Thompson, Mr. Lawrence Dease (principal), Mr. Douglas, and Mr. Covington – all of whom played crucial roles in ensuring the success of the BMSD Beta Club. The achievements of the BMSD Beta Club at the convention are nothing short of outstanding. Our students claimed first place in 10 categories, second in 2 categories, third in 3 categories, and fifth in 2 categories. Notable victories include Marcus Fullard securing 1st place in 8th-grade math, Calan Bright excelling in 6th-grade math, and Sabrina Spry showcasing her prowess in woodworking, sculpture, and apparel design.

Furthermore, the Large Group Performing Arts team, consisting of Camden Talley, Ashanti Drayton, Cyonna Stubbs, Sabrina Spry, JanDrea Williams, Amari Covington, Byron Covington, Maila Bridges Fuller, Myonna Pouncy, Kaylin McInnis, Kayliah Shaw, Serenity, David, Niasia Bridges, Deanna McLaurin, Jourdan McCoy, and Kassidy Emanuel, clinched the 1st place.

These accomplishments speak volumes about our students’ talents and reflect the dedication of the Blenheim Middle School of Discovery staff. The success of the BMSD Jr. Beta Club is a testament to the collaborative efforts of students, sponsors, teachers, and administrators.

Also at the meeting, the district celebrated the MCHS band’s drumline Blaque Ice. The drumline participated in the

Richland Northeast Drumline Competition and won the following awards:

  • Second place overall
  • Fan Favorite
  • Best Bass Drum Line

More student success was celebrated as well. The MCHS girls wrestling team is only two years old, but they have shown success right out of the gate. The team recently won the lower state tournament, finishing first overall among 40 teams.

Eight girls competed in the tournament and six qualified to wrestle for the state title later this month.

MCHS student Garrett Sweatt was saluted for receiving state and national firefighter certification. Sweatt took 171 hours of training — during the school year — to receive these certifications. He past his test on the first try.
