Marlboro County High School Girls Basketball Coach Leah Zimmerman feels the 2022-23 season for the Lady Bulldogs will be a very promising one.
The team has five seniors this year.
“We have a large number of returning students who are more than capable of competing,” Zimmerman said.
The five seniors are Tysonia Lowe, Montayja Isaac, Aubree Miller, Laniyah Peguero, and
Tiajane Witherspoon.
The season started on November 19 with a tournament at Wilson High School with Lamar Silver Fox.
October 31 was the team’s first official day of practice for the season but weren’t able to get into the gym until Nov. 14.
Zimmerman has a few goals for the team.
“I want the students to stay focused, be disciplined throughout the season, make sure we are executing when it comes to playing strong defense and just following the structure that’s laid out through our plays,” she said.
This season, some of the players to watch include Tysonia Lowe, who is one of the top guards in the state.
Zimmerman said Montayja Isaac is a strong rebounder.
“We have a sophomore, Teyona Jenkins, who is playing for the first year,” Zimmerman said. “She’s going to be a big force for us.”
With the season starting in November and going through February or March. The Lady Bulldogs are going to see some tough opponents.
In their region, Zimmerman said they have the Camden Bulldogs who are pretty tough.
“In the past, we had a good competition with Crestwood,” she said. “So those are two teams in our region that we have to look forward to when it comes to good competition.”
Zimmerman has been the girl’s head coach for the past six years.
She described this upcoming season in two words.
“I think will be very eventful and exciting, especially for our fans here in Marlboro County,” she said. “It is something that we can say that they should be looking forward to being excited about.”
Lady Bulldogs play at 6 p.m. with the Men’s team playing immediately after them around 7:30 p.m.
