A team from Clemson University Extension’s 4-H youth development program represented South Carolina and brought home the title of National Champs in Shotgun last month during the 2022 National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska. This is the first time in history SC has won the national title in shotgun sports.
Four South Carolina 4-H members who participate in the state shooting sports program qualified to compete at the national event. This event, which Nebraska 4-H hosts, brought more than 800 4-H’ers from across the country to compete in nine different disciplines.
Dillon County 4-Her Brenna She’ Miller was among the four SC youth chosen to represent our state at this national competition. Miller is the daughter of Billy and Tiffany Miller of Little Rock. She has competed in the Dillon 4-H shooting sports club since she was nine years old under club leader Bill Aston.
In addition to contributing to the team’s first place win in sporting clays, Miller also placed 23rd in the individual skeet competition. Her high score from the competition was 91 in Skeet.
Miller has worked hard this year and has had a very successful season. Her major victories this season include:
–SCTP/4-H Sporting Clays tournament at Moree’s: Highest overall female shooter
–SCTP/4-H scholarship winner
–SCDNR State Skeet Shooting Championship: 2nd place high school senior female
–SCDNR scholarship winner
–SCDNR & Hampton Wildlife Fund: Heybo scholarship winner
–Two perfect rounds of 25 skeet shooting: earned traditional hat shoot.
4-H officials said they were proud of Miller and the positive female role model she has become in this male-dominated sport.
The SC team was 1st in Sporting Clays, 3rd in Skeet, and 6th in Trap. The team will be visiting the state house to be recognized by Governor Henry McMaster in the upcoming weeks.
The Marlboro County 4-H does not currently offer a gun club. However, Marlboro youth are welcome to join the Dillon County 4-H shooting sports team. The new 4-H year kicks off on September 1.
