Since it is the week of July 4th, let’s talk about freedom of choice.
Did you know that you have a CHOICE for whom you want to use for hospice care?
One of the most common misconceptions about hospice care is that “hospice” is one big company, and all hospices are the same. This is not true.
I need you to understand how important it is to do your research when it comes to the best end-of-life care for yourself or your loved one.
There are MANY hospice companies in Marlboro and Chesterfield County as well as the surrounding counties in South Carolina. You must know that you do not necessarily have to sign up with the hospice that your doctor or provider suggests.
You do not have to sign up with the hospice that your hospital suggests. You do not have to sign up with the hospice your nursing home suggests unless the hospice you want is not contracted with that facility.
You do not have to sign up with the hospice that may have an office right down the street. Know that you have a right to choose which hospice you feel is best.
I encourage you to take the time to interview a couple of different agencies. Find out how long they have been in business.
Find out if they have enough clinicians (nurses, CNAs, social workers, chaplains, etc.) to service your area and meet your needs. Ask about tenure.
Find out if the company suggested to you has a staff that’s been around for a while or if they have had a lot of turnover due to transitions with company dynamics. Ask about coverage and insurance and what each company offers. Ask if they have a certified palliative program.
Ask if they can assist you if you or your loved one is receiving CLTC hours. Ask if there is a pediatric program. Ask about coverage- do they cover the entire state and other states, or is it a hospice that is confined to a small area?
Hospices that have multiple offices in multiple locations around the state, and possibly in other states are great, especially during vacation season.
You may be able to go on vacation or take your loved one on vacation and have that company still follow your care as you continue to make those important memories.
You have a choice.
