It is a plant that has been in Mable Graham’s yard for years on Highway 38 South and was planted by her late husband.
But a month ago, it started growing and growing and growing.
According to HappySprout.com, the agave americana or century plant can grow up to 10 feet across and develop leaves that stretch 6 feet long.
In addition to their gargantuan size, they grow in a rosette form, featuring saw-edged foliage with dagger points on the ends.
“I used could just look out my front door to see it but now, I have to step out onto the porch since it has gotten so tall,” she said.
There is a myth that century plants only bloom once in a century.
According to HappySprout.com, century plants only bloom once in their lifetime, but they usually bloom when they are 10 to 30 years old, not once every 100 years.
Graham is not sure if anyone else in the county has one.
After the bloom, the mother plant withers and dies, as its life’s mission is complete.
