The members of the Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held their 2022-23 kick-off meeting for members of Delta Academy and Delta GEMS on Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at Marian Wright Edelman Public Library.
The purpose of the meeting was to connect with participants and invite new members. This year’s theme is “The Awakening: Power, Purpose, and Progression.”
The guest speaker was Ms. Cynthia O., author of “Dream Like A Queen,” a book encouraging young girls to build their dreams and reach their goals.
Ms. Cynthia O. used the theme “The Awakening: Power, Purpose, and Progression” to communicate words of encouragement. She emphasized the following key points; Never stop dreaming, keep your cup full and draw from it, always wear your crown (keep your head up), write down your goals and make them happen, and rule in excellence.
In closing, a tiara was given to each participant. Three names were drawn, and participants received a copy of the book “Dream Like A Queen.”
The Delta Academy provides educational programs for at-risk young women between the ages of 11-14 years of age. The program offers mentoring and educational learning opportunities to participants in collaboration with community support and professionals.
Meetings are held monthly, focusing on the following areas: science, leadership, technology, self-esteem, etiquette, cultural enrichment, and service-learning activities that help foster compassionate and community-minded young ladies.
After young ladies complete their elementary-middle school years, they enter the Delta GEMS Program. This program provides a framework to actualize dreams and goals by instilling a need to excel academically and assist girls with goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond.
Chapter president is Lynn C. Henry, vice president is Andrea R. McLeod, and chair and co-chair of Delta Academy and Delta GEMS are Eunice Ray and April Davis.
