The Marlboro Players will return to the stage in October with “Arsenic and Old Lace” at the Marlboro Civic Center.

Directed by Sarah Crouch and produced by Emmie Beck, the show will run during the evenings of October 13, 14, and 15 with the curtain opening at 7 p.m. each night.

The role of Mortimer Brewster, the protagonist, will be played by Chad Tolson. Tolson, who first describes Mortimer as “a handful,” goes on to describe him as “a self-made man…smart, worldly, and full of ideas.” During his time with The Marlboro Players, Tolson has held roles in “Greater Tuna” and “A Doll’s House”.

One of Mortimer’s two brothers, Jonathan Brewster, will be played by Scott Andrews. When asked to describe his character, Andrews describes Jonathan as an “evil man who kills readily.” Andrews has previously held roles in “The Sound of Music”, “Oliver”, and “King and I”.

Hampton Hubbard will fill the role of Dr. Einstein. Dr. Einstein, according to Hubbard, is the “assistant to Jonathan” and is also the person responsible for performing Jonathan’s plastic surgery he underwent to go undercover. Hubbard’s experience includes roles in “Grease”, “Funny This Happened on the Way to the Forum”, “Godspell”, and “Paint Your Wagon”.

Kara Hodge will fill the role of Abby Brewster, sister to Martha and aunt to Mortimer. “Abby is seen as a nice, sweet, collected, innocent old lady. However, she, and her sister, harbor a dark secret,” according to Hodge’s character description. While acting with The Marlboro Players, Hodge has held roles in “Charlotte’s Web” and “Beauty and the Beast”.

Martha Brewster will be played by Janet Smith. Smith describes Aunt Martha as a “prim” and “timid” woman who “believes in the sisters’ ‘mercy’” and “loves her family.” Smith has previously held roles in “Steel Magnolias” and “The Sound of Music”.

Jennifer Yager is playing the role of Elaine Harper, the love interest of Mortimer Brewster. “Oliver”, “Nunsense”, “Snow White”, “Charlotte’s Web”, and “The Sound of Music” are just some of the plays Yager has participated in.

Sarah Crouch is directing The Marlboro Players’ production of “Arsenic and Old Lace”. Crouch graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in theatre. She has been performing in plays since she was a child with her local library theatre group. To date, Crouch’s favorite role was Maria from “The Sound of Music”, which was put on by The Players last spring. This will be the second play she’s directed, and Crouch is “so grateful to have the cast and crew and Marlboro Player’s support.”
