Northeastern Technical College is having a hiring/enrollment event on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
The public event will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Sheryll Marshall, coordinator of the Northeastern Technical Marlboro campus, said the purpose of this event is to help people in Marlboro County seeking employment.
“We want to do as much as we can here to assist people,” she said.
The recent closing of Mohawk with 600 people displaced is one reason for the event.
“We have a lot of people displaced. Some are not at the age of being able to apply for Social Security. Some have worked there all their lives, and don’t have a high school diploma or GED,” Marshall said. “We’re just trying to provide as much assistance as possible to the companies and businesses in this area with finding qualified people.”
Marshall encouraged everyone to attend the Hiring/Enrollment event, which will have 20-25 employers.
For instance, Kaufman is one of the companies attending the event.
Marshall stated that if Kaufman officials talk with somebody who has some welding experience, but maybe not in the specialty of TIG welding, they will keep their application but will refer them to an NETC enrollment specialist to help the person get signed up for the next TIG welding class being offered. Then when the applicant completes the course, they can take a transcript back to the company to document their successful completion of the training.
She added that some companies might work around the student’s work schedule and have them work a little bit but allow them time to come and take the class as well.
And if a person does not have a resume, Sandra Ellis from the Cheraw campus will be in the Marlboro campus computer lab providing resume assistance.
Marshall expected a good turnout for Wednesday’s event since NETC has advertised the event, along with word of mouth. For anyone who comes to SC Works, Marshall has given them a flyer and a brochure on the types of programs offered at NETC.
She added the WIOA program, which is handled through the unemployment office, is where they could qualify for some assistance and financial aid in helping them pay for their college costs.
Marshall said now would be a perfect time if someone was interested in going back to school.
