Bennettsville Crime Report for August 24

At approximately 5:37 p.m. officers responded to a residence on Pershing Street following a complaint from a gentleman claiming his brother was threatening him via text message. At the scene, the caller stated to officers that the threats stemmed from an ongoing dispute over property belonging to their deceased mother. He further claimed his brother told him he would drive from New York to Bennettsville and “drag him.” The harassed brother also stated to officers he fears his brother making good on his threat and then fleeing back to the safety of New York. A live-in girlfriend who was also on scene, mentioned to officers she too received a threatening text from the brother. Despite all the concerns shared and threats allegedly made, the complainant stated to officers he only wanted to have the incidents documented should something more volatile occur between the siblings in the future. Law enforcement advised the caller to block all incoming messages from his brother and alert BPD again if another incident happens. Case closed.

At approximately 2:49 p.m., officers responded to a business located on Highway 15-401 Bypass East following a report of shoplifting. At the scene, officers spoke with an employee who stated to them an unknown male entered the store, helped himself to a pack of AA batteries from a display at the front entrance, valued at $1.75, and a package of lighters from a nearby shelf. Next, the male sauntered throughout the store, allegedly attempting to open the package of lighters he had not paid for as he went. When asked by the employee to come to the front of the store so a discussion could be had regarding his actions, the male placed the lighters on the counter instead. The male then left the store, still with the batteries concealed upon his person. Officers attempted to locate the male shoplifter but were not successful. Case is active.
