MCCOLL— Over the summer many have noticed a brighter looking McColl. Despite the heat, Councilwoman Brenda Barfield and several other members of the community have donated time to clean the streets of McColl, dress up the town sign with flowers and new flags, as well as set out memorial benches and beautiful planters.
Barfield says the town has applied for several grants but has not received any yet.
“I plan to pursue several smaller beautification grants in the upcoming year, but these will be smaller grants,” Barfield explains.
She says a lot of donations to improve McColl have come from the residents themselves, a sign Barfield sees as very encouraging.
“There have been at least 10 memorial benches ordered in the last two months. This also helps the beautification project initiative,” says Barfield, adding, “McColl plans to have two fundraisers for Memorial Bricks. One will be in memory of, and the second will be for our veterans— active or past. This is a beautiful way to honor our veterans and loved ones that will last for many years and generations to come.”
Barfield says she could not have made the progress made to date if it were not for numerous volunteers.
“I would really like to thank Doug Jennings Law Firm, Greater Fair Plain AME Zion Church of McColl and the Morris Plant Farm in Maxton, who donated flowers. This was a tremendous help,” Barfield said, continuing, “I want to do this for our town, to give it a more positive image. I want to give the residents of McColl the motivation and inspiration that things can improve. It may not happen overnight, or even quickly, but it can be done when communities come together and help.”
