BENNETTSVILLE — Members of the Bennettsville Marine Corps League Detachment 1219 were on the agenda at the Marlboro County Council meeting held in council chambers on August 13 to present their proposal for a monument to be erected on the Marlboro County Courthouse grounds.
The monument will honor the brave individuals who served in the Vietnam War and memorialize those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Detachment Marine Larry Pouncy made the presentation before council and submitted a concept of the design for the monument and a letter to council outlining the plan and asking for council’s support for its establishment and placement on the courthouse grounds.
The monument’s design is by Brown Memorials and its cost is $6,405. A fundraising effort is now underway by the Bennettsville Marine Corps League to fund the initiative with donations from public and civic organizations, local businesses, and individuals.
The Bennettsville Marine Corps League, DBA Great Pee Dee Devil Dogs Detachment 1219, is a registered non-profit with the South Carolina Secretary of State and publicly listed with the IRS – EIN 42-1683786.
Organizations, businesses, and individuals can mail their tax-deductible donation to the Marine Corps League, PO Box 1373, Bennettsville SC 29512-1373. Checks should be made payable to The Marine Corps League Detachment 1219 and marked for Vietnam War Monument.
Detachment Commandant Lixander Henry and other Detachment members plan to meet with the Bennettsville City Council, business leaders, and local civic organizations to promote this effort to establish a Vietnam War monument in Marlboro County. The target date for completion of the project is National Vietnam War Veterans Day – March 29th 2027.
