BENNETTSVILLE—- The Marlboro County Tourism, Parks, and Recreation, and the city of Bennettsville were proud to announce a resurfacing project for the basketball courts at McLeod Street Basketball Park, holding a groundbreaking ceremony and celebration Monday, August 3. In June, a similar event was held in honor of a tennis court resurfacing project, which is now underway, at the Bennettsville Community Center courts.
Director of Tourism, Parks, and Recreation Jaharra Graves thanked everyone who attended the McLeod Street Basketball Park Groundbreaking.
“What an exciting day as we celebrated the beginning of our new outdoor basketball court resurfacing project. This improvement will provide a safer, smoother, and more enjoyable court for our community to play, compete, and connect for years to come,” stated Graves, adding, “The groundbreaking was truly a community celebration. It was wonderful to share the rich basketball community history and knowledge of basketball while looking ahead to the future of this special neighborhood park.”
During the celebratory event several “The Last Shot” contests were undertaken, with announced winners being Half-Court Shot: Coach Ray, 3-Point Shot: Coach Knox, Free Throw Shot: Coach Purvis and Hot Shot Contest: Jazz.
Graves said she was particularly thankful for Mayor Tyron Abraham and the Bennettsville City Council for their commitment to moving this important project forward.
She said, “We also appreciate Billy Goat Fries, LLC, for providing delicious food and helping make the event even more enjoyable. The event wouldn’t be possible without the TPR team. They work hard to pull these events together. Thank you again to everyone who came out to celebrate with us. We can’t wait to welcome you back for the ribbon-cutting ceremony in the near future,” said Graves, also teasing more details to come.
