BENNETTSVILLE — This summer ‘s heat has brought with it a special treat this year—not one, but two, ice cream shops! In June, Brew and Bake announced extended hours and a large ice cream bar featuring 20 frozen favorites. Now in July, Sarah Hyers, owner of Grandma’s Treasures, has announced a new edition to their location: Poppy’s Ice Cream.
Shaping up to be a sweet year, both shops say they will feature desserts to warm the soul throughout the winter months.
Brew and Bake brings the freeze
With the closure of the bridge on Cheraw Street for repair work, Lora Biron, owner of Brew and Bake, has gotten creative in her efforts to keep customers flooding in while construction is underway. One way Biron is attracting customers is with ice cream.
“We are very excited to offer ice cream,” Biron says. “Announcing ice cream has brought a whole new wave of customers we didn’t even know existed,” she shared, adding she loves bringing the experience of coffee, baked goods, merchandise items, and now ice cream, to a whole new set of patrons.
Having a large space makes carrying ice cream ideal for Brew and Bake, who already rent out space for parties, get-togethers, business meetings, and reunions.
“We are really looking forward to hosting more birthday parties. We have the perfect space and atmosphere for it—parents can get together over coffee while the kids have fun with presents and ice cream,” Biron said.
Some flavors Biron is excited to announce are Cotton Candy, Cappuccino Crunch, Brown Butter Bourbon Truffle, Tipsy Peach, Rocky Road, Black Cherry, Cookies and Cream, and Strawberry Cheesecake. She says more will be added as opening day for ice cream at Brew and Bake approaches.
Brew and Bake will not just be serving ice cream, they will also have a buffet of toppings, as well as an impressive menu of custom sundaes.
According to Biron, Brew and Bake’s new hours are Tuesday through Friday 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. and from 5 until 9 p.m. Biron says they will also be open Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Ice cream pops up at Grandma’s Treasures
This week Grandma’s Treasures announced it is adding Poppy’s Ice Cream.
“We are starting with eight flavors,” says Hyers, explaining she will add more as public demand dictates and they will also alternate flavors.
Poppy’s keeps it simple to start, offering staples like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, but will also have a variety of flavors such as Superman, Orange Sherbert, Moose Tracks, and Praline Pecan.
“I have always wanted to see an ice cream shop in uptown. I really think it is needed. It’s been a dream of mine and I had the space, so I thought, why not,” Hyers explained.
Truly taking the idea to heart, Hyers and her husband and business partner Bill have thrown themselves into creating the perfect home for Poppy’s— right down to aprons hung lovingly on the wall.
“Can’t you just see families strolling down the sidewalk having an ice cream,” Hyers asks, adding, “It is just what our little community needs to foster a sense of fellowship in its business district.”
In addition to ice cream, Poppy’s will offer sundaes, shakes, ice cream soda floats, and a variety of delicious sundaes.
Surrounding Poppy’s Ice Cream bar are shelves lined with goods for sale handcrafted by your Marlboro County neighbors that include baked breads, homegrown vegetables, and other desserts like cookies and fudge. Essentially while out getting ice cream, families can shop around for most, if not, all their dinner ingredients, courtesy of their neighbor’s hard work.
“That is what Grandma’s Treasures is all about, providing a space for everyone to showcase their talents and fill a need in the community,” Hyers says.
As if students needed another reason to want to go back to school, Poppy’s is teaming up with the Marlboro Chamber of Commerce to celebrate area elementary and middle school students who either make the A Honor roll or have 100% attendance.
“We want to celebrate not just those making the grade, but also those students who are showing up every day and putting in the effort to try,” Hyers explained.
