MARLBORO COUNTY— The Marlboro County School District (MCSD) is now operating under state oversight following a series of recent concerns. The shift came after the South Carolina State Board of Education declared a State of Education Emergency, a move that dissolved the county’s elected school board and placed the district under state control.
Although there were initially grumblings among some Board members about challenging the state’s ruling, the Board of Trustees now says most members will not challenge through an appeal. Board leaders indicate that stepping away from additional legal proceedings will allow district leadership and state-appointed officials to concentrate on the district’s immediate challenges while strengthening student achievement.
“While the Board respectfully disagrees with some aspects of the State Board’s decision, we recognize the importance of maintaining stability and continuity for the students, families, educators, and staff of Marlboro County School District during this transition period… Our foremost priority has always been, and will continue to be, the educational success and well-being of the children of Marlboro County,” stated Michael Coachman, chairman of the Marlboro County Board of Trustees in a letter released Monday.
The board also emphasized that, despite losing its formal governing role, members still intend to remain engaged with and supportive of the Marlboro County education community.
“Although we will no longer serve in our official capacities as members of the Board of Trustees, we remain committed to the citizens of the entire Marlboro County community,” said the MCSD in a released statement.
In its message to the public, the Marlboro County School District Board of Trustees expressed appreciation to county residents for their confidence and support, while also recognizing the ongoing commitment shown by teachers, administrators, and staff serving students across the district.
