Consisting of thirty days, April was the second month in the ancient Roman calendar before January and February were included. On the Gregorian and Julian calendars, April is the fourth month.
The name “April” comes from the Latin word “aperire,” which means to “open”—because the month is known for the lands return to blossoms and growth.

Spring officially starts March 20-21 each year, but for the Northern Hemisphere, April is the month when bare limbs sprout new growth and buds that peep in March now bloom in full resplendency.

• A Polish holiday celebrated the Monday after Easter, Dyngus Day is celebrated April 6, 2026, this year. The American city known for putting on the biggest and most elaborate Dyngus Day celebration is none other than Buffalo, New York.
