April brings showers and …

in

We all know April showers bring May flowers, but what special observances, holidays and significant events does our fourth month also bring?

First, a little history:

Consisting of thirty days, April was the second month in the ancient Roman calendar before January and February were included. On the Gregorian and Julian calendars, April is the fourth month.

The name “April” comes from the Latin word “aperire,” which means to “open”—because the month is known for the lands return to blossoms and growth.

Heart of spring

Spring officially starts March 20-21 each year, but for the Northern Hemisphere, April is the month when bare limbs sprout new growth and buds that peep in March now bloom in full resplendency.

Autumn winds are blowing leaves in colors of gold, burnt umber, and eggplant in the Southern Hemisphere where April heralds the official start of fall.

Known for its often wild and unpredictable weather, April is the peak of tornado season in the United States.

The animal associated with the month of April is the mighty duck — symbolizing endurance and being of good cheer as water rolls off its back.

Looking up

One of the oldest starry night shows in the sky, the Lyrid Meteor Shower, is brightest mid-way through the month.
