BENNETTSVILLE — In honor of Women’s History Month, members of the Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held a workshop to recognize Women in Leadership roles Saturday, March 7th at the Marlboro County Courthouse in Bennettsville.

Participants were members of the chapter’s Delta Academy and Delta GEMS mentoring groups. The purpose of the workshop was to recognize women who have shattered glass ceilings in our counties, using their stories to inspire participants to see themselves as the next generation of leaders. The presenters, Ms. Marquita McLain, Marlboro County Clerk of Court and Ms. Marquita Britton, Dillion County Clerk of Court made history becoming the first African American women elected to a county-wide position. The workshop provided an overview of their job responsibilities, technology advancements, professional experiences, and interpersonal skills, all of which are important to leadership roles. In addition to their presentations, they discussed their career journeys and a shared mission to drive positive change within their communities.

The presentation concluded with a question and answer session, followed by an encouraging closing that empowered participants to pursue their goals with confidence, maintain a professional image, and hold their heads high. Following the workshop, participants enjoyed a brunch prepared by Lulabell’s Catering.

The goals of the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS programs are to empower young African American girls by fostering academic excellence, leadership development, cultural awareness, financial literacy, physical and mental health awareness, and community involvement. The theme for this year is, “Blooming Together With Strength, Grace, and Courage.” Chapter President is Gina Owens, Vice President is Margaret Primus, and Program Chair is Eunice Ray.
