MCCOLL — Chief Charles English of the McColl Police Department announced his resignation Wednesday, citing concerns over safety.
Previously without a chief for seven months, the department had already undergone a tumultuous leadership period when English stepped into the role seven months ago in June with the intention of righting the ship.
Mayor Robert Outlaw has been a constant source of praise for the new chief, sharing with the Herald-Advocate he feels English did a tremendous job during his brief tenure.
“I was very saddened to hear this news,” said Mayor Robert Outlaw in a phone interview Wednesday morning. “We do have another candidate currently in the running, coming in today in fact, so we hope to bring news of having someone hired within the next couple weeks,” added Outlaw.
The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement they are prepared and stand at the ready to assist the McColl Police Department in keeping residents safe for however long they are needed.
Chief English’s announcement comes just seven months into the job.
