BENNETTSVILLE — Continuing his push to keep families in Bennettsville safe, Bennettsville Fire Chief Chris Burks and his fellow dedicated firefighters have been touring schools and daycares across the city.

October is Fire Prevention Awareness Month and the crew at the BFD are maximizing each day by taking fire prevention information to the streets. Throughout the month, Chief Burks has worked diligently towards hammering home the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

“More for adults, I would say the number one thing folks can do to stay safe and keep their homes and loved ones safe from fire is to have a working smoke alarm in the home. We really cannot stress the importance of this one simple action enough,” advises Burks.

Students across the city especially enjoyed receiving a visit from the BFD’s mascot Sparky. When asked if students had fun, Chief Burks two-word answer perfectly summed it up, “Oh yeah.”

The BFD spends most of October in Bennettsville schools and daycares.

“The kids always have a great time, and we enjoy being out in the community doing things,” said Burks, adding, “Getting to know and spend time with the kids is always fun and we count it as a blessing any time we know we are leaving students better informed and confident in the steps to take if they, or their family, experience a fire.”

So far, the BFD has visited several daycares, Bennettsville Elementary, Bennettsville Intermediate and most recently Marlboro Academy this week. Chief Burks says his department plans to visit with another area daycare in the first week of November.

“Fire prevention awareness is year-round,” reminds Chief Burks.
