WALLACE — Ghosts, goblins, and ghouls galore flooded the walkways around the Wallace Elementary and Middle School Halloween night for the Wallace Fire Rescue’s first Trunk-or-Treat, organized by Wallace firemen Shane Steen and Jimmy Sowell.

“We wanted to do this for our youngsters to have somewhere safe in the community for them to have fun on Halloween. Wallace doesn’t have large neighborhoods for trick-or-treating, so this is a way to provide treats parents know are safe, as well as fun and community fellowship,” explained Steen.

In addition to several area businesses and churches, the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office also came out to be a part of all the fun.

“It’s nice to have all the churches and the sheriff’s office out tonight, it adds to folks feeling safe,” commended Steen. He continued, “The turnout has been really impressive.”

Steen said he spoke with several families from all around the county.

Handing out candy, Kiera Steen added, “It’s wonderful to see so many kids out having fun. The turnout has been really great. We don’t have any good developments in Wallace for the kids to trick-or-treat in, which gave Shane [Steen] the idea to hold something safe and local for the community.” She added she expects next year to be even bigger, saying, “I can’t wait to see how this event grows.”

Praised by Steen, the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office shared they were thrilled to be included in Wallace’s first trunk-or-treat community party.

“I’m glad to be here seeing how great the event is going. We have a huge crowd out here tonight and it is good to see so many members of our community here, getting out, and having a good time together,” said Sheriff Larry McNeil, adding, “We always enjoys spending time with our community.”

Acknowledging his self-proclaimed sweet tooth, the Sheriff admits, “And of course I love the candy.”

Newly engaged couple Zackary Quick and Ramzee Williams were also excited to be giving away candy at Wallace’s first trunk-or-treat.

Quick, who is with the Brightsville Fire Department, said when WFR called, they jumped at the chance. “We thought it was a great idea when we heard about it and so we decided to come on out and join in,” he explained.
