BENNETTSVILLE — This week, the city of Bennettsville will begin the demolition of 234 East Main Street, a 1925 landmark that once housed a movie theater, restaurant, and cleaning business.
While generations remember its marquee lights and bustling storefronts, years of deferred maintenance have left the structure unsafe for public use, officials said.
This moment is about more than razing old walls — it’s about injecting momentum and pride back into our downtown. The cleared site will make way for mixed-use development, including pedestrian walkways, green space, and storefronts designed to spark entrepreneurship and community gatherings.
“Demolition isn’t destruction,” said Mayor Tyron Abraham. “It’s a necessary step towards a brighter future. We’re creating a Bennettsville that is beautiful, thriving, and ready for what’s next.”
