Academic scholarship re-awarded in honor of Tschana K. Parnell
MARLBORO COUNTY — In a heartfelt tribute to a life taken too soon, the Tschana K. Parnell Scholarship has been re-awarded this year to two previous recipients who have continued to excel in college, keeping alive the legacy of the scholarship’s namesake — the late Tschana K. Parnell, a former MCHS class president, who passed away in 2001.
The scholarships were first awarded to Brianna Davis in 2023 and Taekwon Sellers in 2024. The scholarship committee chose to recognize the continued success of both whom are making significant strides in their college journeys.
“Tschana was known for her passion for education, leadership, and uplifting others,” said her mother, Linda Parnell. “We believe Brianna and Taekwon embody that same spirit. Re-awarding the scholarship to them is a way to honor Tschana’s memory and celebrate young people who are turning potential into purpose.”
Brianna Davis, currently a Business major at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) maintains a 4.0 GPA. Brianna serves as an admissions ambassador, dean’s scholar and communications assistant at the humanities research center. Additionally, she is a member of the Women in Business organization Black Student Union and Black Awakening Choir. Brianna will graduate in May, 2026.
Taekwon Sellers, currently a rising sophomore at USC Upstate Mary Black College of Nursing maintains a 3.1 GPA. Taekwon continues to rise as a scholar and is an example of discipline and determination.
Both students expressed deep gratitude for the renewed support.
The Tschana K. Parnell Memorial Scholarship was generously funded by donations from Tschana’s family and friends and will continue to be awarded annually, ensuring that Tschana’s vibrant spirit lives on and continues to motivate future leaders within MCHS.
