BENNETTSVILLE — The City of Bennettsville has recently gained significant attention and financial support as it takes strides to improve its infrastructure and assist low-income homeowners impacted by extreme weather. From being awarded a substantial housing recovery grant to being highlighted in a statewide publication for its proactive utility upgrades, the city is being recognized as a model for progress and preparedness.
$1.8 Million Grant to Support Storm-Damaged Homes
Earlier this spring, SC Housing awarded $9.2 million through the Housing Trust Fund Disaster Assistance Program (HTF DAP) to aid cities and counties affected by extreme weather events. Bennettsville received a notable $1,798,878, one of the highest allocations among 11 recipients.
This funding is designated to help low-income homeowners make vital repairs to storm-damaged homes not covered by insurance. Eligible residents — those earning 80% or less of the Area Median Income — can apply for up to $30,000 in assistance. The damages must be directly linked to natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, or tornadoes. With this support, Bennettsville aims to rebuild stronger, safer neighborhoods for its most vulnerable citizens.
Recognition in Uptown Magazine for Infrastructure Improvements
In addition to disaster recovery efforts, Bennettsville was featured in the May 2025 issue of the Municipal Association of South Carolina’s Uptown Magazine. The city was recognized, alongside Lake City, for its commitment to replacing aging utility lines — some over a century old. These updates are designed to improve water and sewer services, reduce costs, and increase system capacity.
As many South Carolina towns face infrastructure challenges due to aging systems, Bennettsville’s work serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive investment. New infrastructure will not only prevent future service disruptions but also help avoid the repeated cost of emergency repairs.
Community Collaboration and Regional Economic Vision
Bennettsville was also represented in the Pee Dee Regional Council of Governments’ “Coffee with the COG” event on May 22. This quarterly networking forum emphasized the importance of economic development, infrastructure investment, and community engagement. Presentations included success stories from neighboring municipalities like Cheraw, inspiring collaboration across the region.
As Bennettsville continues to position itself for long-term growth and resilience, its leadership and initiatives are drawing well-earned attention. Whether through housing grants, infrastructure renewal, or regional cooperation, the city is actively shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future for its residents.
