LAURINBURG – Scotland Health has announced two opportunities for area high school students to explore careers in health care.

This spring break, students are invited to participate in a non-paid job shadowing experience from April 21-25, followed by the return of the annual Junior Volunteer Program this summer, running from June 11 through Aug. 6 at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Job shadowing program

The job shadowing program allows students to visit various areas of the health care system, including departments throughout Scotland Memorial Hospital as well as Scotland Health’s outlying primary care and specialty care clinics. Participants will gain firsthand experience in a health care setting, helping them determine their interest in pursuing a career in this vital field.

“We are committed to fostering the next generation of health care professionals,” said Nancy Rogers, volunteer manager for Scotland Health. “This program provides students with a unique opportunity to observe and learn about different health care roles, from nursing and pharmacy to health education and nuclear medicine.”

This opportunity is open to all students in ninth grade and higher. Interested students should contact their school’s career counselor for more information.

Junior Volunteer Program

This summer, Scotland Health will hold its annual junior volunteer program, which allows students to explore the inner workings of Scotland Memorial Hospital while giving back to the community. The program consists of three 2-week sessions – June 16-27, June 30-July 11, and July 14-25.

Junior Volunteers will work Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM during their selected session.

“Our summer junior volunteer program is a fantastic opportunity for teens to work with a variety of departments and services throughout the hospital, allowing them to explore potential career paths in health care,” explained Rogers. “This program not only fosters a deeper understanding of the health care system but also helps students develop essential skills, build confidence, and create lasting connections with professionals in the field. At Scotland Health, we believe that by investing in our youth today, we are nurturing the health care leaders of tomorrow.”
