MARLBORO COUNTY — Members of the Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. mentoring group EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) participated in a trash-pick up on Highway 9 Saturday, October 26, 2024.
Members of EMBODI, mentors and chapter members met at Grace Temple Fellowship Church and began their service project along a two mile stretch located on Hwy 9 in Wallace, S.C. The area of the highway is named Delta EMBODI. Members and participants meet three times a year with the goal of picking up trash to reduce litter seen on South Carolina highways.
EMBODI (Formerly Summit III) was launched in the 1990’s by Delta Sigma Theta Chapters nationally. It focuses on workshops and activities that assist young men in reaching their fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally. The program is centered on themes such as: self-esteem, physical health/wellness, technology, leadership, community service, non-traditional careers, entrepreneurship, field trips and much more.
The chapter is dedicated to growing young male leaders. Monthly sessions are led by male community leaders, fraternities, organizations and business professionals who serve as role models to EMBODI participants. Chapter president is Gina Owens, vice-president is Margaret Primus, and EMBODI chair is Dannie Blair.
