Marlboro County High School Football Coach Bobby Collins is leaving to become head football coach at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill.
The Rock Hill Schools’ board of trustees approved his contract at their board meeting on Monday.
Collins, who is also the athletic director at the school, has been in the district for three years.
“The best thing to happen to my coaching career was coming down to Marlboro County,” Collins said. “To be here in the midst of COVID, a superintendent change, two principal changes, it was a humbling experience. It was also a growing experience for me as a professional.”
He added the football team had not been as successful as he wanted it to be but said the district has great kids and great leaders here in the community that wants the best for Marlboro County football.
“I think the program was definitely going in the right direction, Collins said. “The next head coach will be very, very, very successful.”
Some accomplishments that he was proud of as coach included being able to clean up the weight room, get the turf installed for the football field and have the locker room updated.
As MCHS athletic director, he noted that the 2020-21 basketball team won a state championship, the wrestling program was able to restart along with having girls and boys soccer and golf.
“I was just excited to see that athletic programs had an opportunity to continue to grow,” he said.
At South Pointe, Collins will be the head football coach.
“It was a really tough decision,” Collins said. “We have a lot of great players here coming back this year, and I know that they’re going to be successful.”
He said the tradition at South Pointe is really strong and he has family in the Fort Mill and Rock Hill areas.
In the past, he was head coach at Hough High School in Cornelius, NC in 2010 and head coach at Lancaster High School in 2014.
“I have a lot of family in that area,” Collins said. “So when an opportunity came up, getting closer to family just made me want to take it.”
