Humane Society to host animal adoption event on Friday and Saturday at shelter

This weekend's pet adoption event at the Humane Society of Marlboro County could help find forever homes for many animals at the shelter.
Officials are participating along with many shelters and organizations across the state in the second annual Pick Me! South Carolina adoption event.
It will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the animal shelter, 242 Ag Street in Bennettsville.
Stephanie Jones, shelter director, said there will be no adoption fees for adult cats and dogs.
"But they do have to apply with an adoption application and be approved," she said. "We want to make the best match based on the personality of the dog and not just how they look. We have a lot of great dogs."
The event which is sponsored by the Petco Foundation and organized by No Kill South Carolina with the goal of saving 1,500 lives through adoptions in one weekend statewide.
The Humane Society has prepared for the event by having 20-25 dogs and 10 cats available that have been spayed and neutered.
Kittens and puppies will not be available because they are too young to be spayed and neutered.
Most of the dogs will be in the outside play area so the public can see them. If someone would like to take a closer look at a dog, it can be brought out to them.
"I think it showcases them better than just being in their kennels," she said.

Other events
Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Bojangles Southern 500 on Sept. 6-8 to run the concession stand in the garage area.  They get to keep all of the tips and 10 percent of the sales for the Humane Society.
"We have to have enough staff to staff it for two to three days," she said. "It is hard work."
The Humane Society is participating in the eighth annual Grateful Dog Festival on July 27 to benefit local Humane Societies. Volunteers are needed for the booth at the event and the silent auction.
Jones said they will have a booth there and are helping with the silent auction.
The Humane Society of Marlboro County also needs volunteers at the shelter, monetary donations, dog/cat food and other items.
Regular hours are from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and noon- 3 p.m. Saturday.
