Clio traffic stop yields drugs, phones
A traffic stop Tuesday evening in Clio yielded drugs and smart phones headed to the Bennettsville Federal Correctional Institution.
Clio Lt. Chad Cheras said Officer Trey Cox stopped a vehicle speeding with a tail light out at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
When Cox smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, he asked the driver, Timothy Woods, about it.
Woods said he had smoked some earlier.
Cheras said Cox asked if there was any more marijuana in the vehicle with Woods replying there was some in the trunk.
Cheras said Cox asked to search the vehicle, opened the trunk and found two pounds of marijuana, a dozen new smart phones, several hundred cigarettes and a brick of an unknown substance -- all vacuum sealed. Inside the package were 12 high powered magnets.
Cheras said the magnets would have been used to put the packages under the vehicle to go into the prison.
Cheras said Woods and Timothy Ratley were arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute within close proximity to a school and criminal conspiracy.
While interviewing Woods, it was revealed that all items found were going to the Bennettsville Federal Correctional Institution.
Woods and Ratley are being held at the Marlboro Detention Center. They were to have a bond hearing Thursday morning.
