Playoff brackets set for both Bulldog teams
Both the girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams will tip-off action in the South Carolina Class AAAA playoffs this week. The girls will be on the road at Aiken High School on Tuesday, while the boys will host Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School on Wednesday.
The girls' road trip will be their first playoff appearance since the 2014-15 season ended with a first-round defeat at Stall. Marlboro enters the game with a much more impressive resume than the Lady Green Hornets. However, playing in Region 6-AAAA left Marlboro in fourth place with a 16-8 overall record, 4-6 in the region.
Aiken was 5-5 in Region 5-AAAA, only 11-10 overall. They are led offensively by sophomore guard Anija Jones, who scores 10.4 points per contest.
The winner of Tuesday night's contest will face the winner of Wilson and Dreher.
The O-W Bruins also finished region play with a 5-5 mark. They were 16-10 overall. They won three of their last five games to lock up the final playoff bid in their conference. They are led by sophomore guard Jordan Simpson, who averages 14.7 points per contest.
Marlboro County completed the regular season with an overall record of 18-7, 8-2 in region games.
The Wednesday contest will be the Bulldogs' first home playoff appearance since defeating Lakewood in the third round of the 2015-16 playoffs. That win propelled the Bulldogs to the Lower State Championship game, where they fell to Midland Valley by two points.
The winner will take on the winner of the Darlington - Brookland-Cayce contest Saturday night. The Bulldogs would have home-court advantage in that game. The likely third-round opponent would be top-seeded A.C. Flora in Columbia next Tuesday.
