School District holds 2020 Back to School Rally on Zoom

Instead of the usual convocation in the gym at  Marlboro County High School, Marlboro County School District teachers, staff, and administration used Zoom for the 2020 Back to School Rally.
Superintendent Dr. Gregory McCord said it was a chance to inspire and encourage teachers, staff, and administration of the district.
“Every day we have been allowed to do something that not many others have the opportunity to do —  to educate,” he said. “Educate not just the young people coming to us from Marlboro County but educate everyone in our community and life. This is truly a calling.”
District employees and teachers and staff from each school still had a chance to display their colors and enthusiasm for the 2020-21 school year.
While everyone was on Zoom, McCord, Board Chairman Larry McNeil, and Board member Rev. James Smith along with district officials headed out to surprise the Classified Staff of the Year and Teacher of the Year with flowers and a check.

Lula Mae Woods celebrates 104th birthday with a drive-by party

CLIO  —   Birthday celebrations have been hard to do during the pandemic.
But Lula Mae Billings Woods didn’t have to worry about her 104th birthday because all she had to do was sit in her doorway to get some love.
Her family, friends, and community members participated in a drive-by birthday celebration for Woods on Saturday, Aug. 15. Woods turned 104 on Aug. 14.
People lined up in their vehicles at old School of Discovery, then drove past her home honking their horns, and yelling well wishes to her. It was led by the Clio Police.
Dennis Hardison of A New Creation played jazz music. Hardison has played every year since her 90th birthday.
Woods said she felt good about turning 104.
She attributed her longevity to God and asking him to keep going as long as he sees fit.

Bulldogs open nostalgia football season with thrilling 21-19 win over Hartsville

EDITOR'S NOTE: With the high school sports season delayed and facing possible cancellation,  it is looking more and more like that there may be a fall without Bulldog football.  That just can't happen.
So, the Herald-Advocate is going to create a season of "the Bulldogs' greatest hits."  Each week, we will remember a classic game from MCHS history against the opponent the 2020 Bulldogs would have faced.  If this year's team does get to take the field, we'll take up covering the current team.
The Bulldogs were originally scheduled to open the year at Hartsville tomorrow night.  This article is from the October 27, 2011 edition of the Herald-Advocate.
