S.C. Department of Transportation officials said work is almost completed on Cottingham Boulevard.
A section of Cottingham Boulevard has been closed resulting in traffic congestion in other areas of Bennettsville.
According to Kyle Berry, district five engineering administrator for S.C. DOT, Cottingham Boulevard was originally slated to be resurfaced from West Main Street to Highway 15-401.
During the initial milling and resurfacing operations two weeks ago, weak base material was discovered requiring additional work by the contractor.
Berry said the contractor has completed roadway base improvements in the four travel lanes by mixing cement with the existing roadway base to provide additional strength to the underlying material.
The final base improvements in the center median and turn lanes are scheduled to be completed on Tuesday.
In the next three days, two layers of asphalt will be placed on the new cement-treated base.
Berry said, weather permitting, this section of Cottingham Boulevard is scheduled to be reopened to traffic Friday evening.
“The S.C. DOT appreciates the patience of the traveling public and especially the local citizens of Marlboro County while this work is taking place,” he said.
“Although the road repairs have required more work and traffic impacts than initially anticipated, the goal is to provide a stronger and more durable pavement for years to come.”
