In an emergency meeting today (Dec. 19), the Marlboro County Council unanimously voted to take legal action against J. Davis Enterprise, the current franchise solid waste contractor responsible for household garbage collection in the county.
Davis has operated its service in Marlboro County under other names such as USA Waste.

Clean up of the former casinos at the state line is near completion

McCOLL — The clean up of old casino structures at the state line in McColl is almost finished.
Once completed, a brick “Welcome to Marlboro County” sign will be erected at the site.
The cleanup was an initiative of Councilman Verd Odom, which started when he got elected three years ago.
“It has been a big thing for me to try to get this property cleaned up,” he said.
Like others, he didn’t like the area being the first impression people had of Marlboro County.

Council recognizes Dr. Prince in her final regular meeting

Members of the Marlboro County Council praised and celebrated the leadership of chairman Dr. Carolyn Prince at their monthly meeting Tuesday.
Prince, who won the Bennettsville mayor's position during the November election, will have to resign from county council to accept her new office.  Tuesday's meeting was her last on council before taking office with the city on January 2.
Vice-chairman Jason Steen read a resolution saluting and highlighting accomplishments of Prince's 19 years on county council.
Prince was presented a framed version of the resolution, as well as a plaque with her chairman's gavel.
During the segment of the meeting in which the individual councilmen had the floor, each thanked Prince and wished her success leading Bennettsville City Council.
"I thank the staff and fellow council members for their efforts and willingness to work together," said Prince.
