The Gulf, Spring Fling and circus are events happening during the weekend

Memorial Day weekend will be busy in Marlboro County with several events planned.
"The Gulf" Heritage Dedication and Street Dance will honor an area that was once the center of business and entertainment for African Americans in the county.
"The Gulf" got its name from a Gulf service station, Everybody's Station, where Gulf gas was sold.
An authentic period Gulf sign will be erected at the corner of West Market and Liberty Streets. The project is co-sponsored by the city of Bennettsville and Bennettsville Bicentennial.
A public unveiling and dedication of the sign will be at 6 p.m. Friday. A short program will talk about the significance of the area. The School of Discovery Jazz and Shiloh Baptist Church Youth Choir will perform at the dedication.
Elisabeth K. McNiel, director of Tourism, Parks, and Recreation for the city of Bennettsville, said it will be commemorated with a plaque at a later date.
After the ceremony, a street dance will be from 7-11 p.m. in the block of Market Street between Liberty and Cheraw Streets.
It will feature live music by Dennis Hardison and A New Creation and DJ Byrd as the first of the City of Bennettsville's 2019 "Two Hours from Anywhere" concerts. Bounce houses along with food, craft, and informational vendors can also be found along West Market Street.
McNiel said there will be an opportunity for people to record their memories of the Gulf.

Relay for Life exceeds goal, raises more than $60,000

For seven years, Melani Green has sponsored a Relay for Life team in memory of her grandmother.
"We want to help other people," said Green at the campsite for the M.E. Green House team at Relay for Life. "We know what it is like to lose someone to cancer. We have so many people in our family that have had cancer so we come every year just to raise money to help other people."
Green's team was one of 23 teams who participated in the 25th annual Relay for Life of Marlboro County on May 18 at Marlboro County High School.
"This is what my family does and we get together as a family to do this," Green said.
The event exceeded its goal of $40,000 by raising $60,166.83 for the American Cancer Society.
Bridges, event lead for the Marlboro County Relay for Life, said she expected more money to be turned in

Popular Austin, TX band Shinyribs to perform in Bennettsville June 8

The Austin, Texas based band Shinyribs will headline the City of Bennettsville's 2 Hours From Anywhere Summer Concert Series, on June 8.
Once you’ve seen Shinyribs’ Kevin Russell on-stage and heard his band’s music, it’s impossible to forget. Known for his outrageous outfits and antics, he’s a regular fashion icon, liable to turn up in anything from his lime-green sherbet leisure suit to a flashing LED cloak.
Russell recently donned the cloak for a soulful performance of “East Texas Rust” on the award-winning PBS show Austin City Limits.
One of the pioneers of the Americana genre as a member of The Gourds, Russell took his musical inspiration from the fertile Ark-La-Tex turf.  In the immortal words of the title track to their most recent album, “I Got Your Medicine,” Shinyribs band has the cure to whatever ails you.
“It’s the universal dance anyone can do,” he says. “Nobody feels self-conscious or out of place.  It’s a great way to get everybody involved.  You can’t really top that.”
