Saturday concert will feature ‘firsts’

Saturday night’s concert by the Austin, Texas, based band Shinyribs will be a first on several levels.
The free concert, which is part of the Bennettsville Bicentennial Celebration, will be a test run at a new venue - the Marlboro County Historical Museum Complex grounds.  The stage will be set up on the side of the Jennings-Brown House, facing the back of the Marian Wright Edelman Public Library.
“The county has been a partner in bringing this concert and this location to reality.  They have graciously allowed us to use the space and have been instrumental in getting it set up,” said Elisabeth McNiel, chairman of the Bicentennial Committee and the City of Bennettsville’s Director of Tourism, Parks and Recreation.
“The Bennettsville  Community Center is an excellent facility for many events but it isn’t a great concert venue due to acoustical issues. If everything goes as planned, the museum grounds will be a great asset for future performances,” she said.

Spring game set for Thursday

The Marlboro County High football team will wrap up their spring practice sessions this week.  That will include the annual Black and Gold spring game on Thursday.
"We had wanted to have the game during the last period of the school day, so the student body would all be on hand to watch.  However, it is just too hot for that," said head coach Bobby Collins.
The game will start at 7 p.m. instead.  Collins intends to divide the team into two roughly-even units and play two 25 or 30 minute halves.
One thing that will be on display is Collins' offensive strategy and how it differs from that of former coach Dean Boyd.
"Last year, the team was in the shotgun with one running back about 95% of the time.  I prefer to have the quarterback under center most of the time, with a tight end and usually two running backs," said Collins.

Memorial Day ceremony held last Friday

Vikki Harris wanted people to always remember that Memorial Day is not for the living.
"It is for those who have paid that price," she said. "We want none of you to ever forget those people who paid that ultimate price."
Harris, director for the Marlboro County Veteran Affairs Office,  spoke at the third annual Memorial Day Wreath Laying on May 24 at the monument at the Marlboro County Courthouse.
"We all have a duty to care for every last veteran, for every last widow, and to look after those dependents of those veterans who have gone on before us," she said. "Let's not forget this and put it in your hearts and your minds. Not just this day but going forward."
