The public had the opportunity to discuss issues with their state and federal government representatives Monday when the Marlboro Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual legislative breakfast at The Skye. State house members Patricia Henegan and Jackie Hayes spoke, as did Rodney Berry of Congressman Tom Rice’s office and A.D. Jordan of US Senator Tim Scott’s office. Above, Henegan (center) and Hayes (right) present Bennettsville Mayor Carolyn Prince with a framed copy of a resolution passed in the state house commemorating Bennettsville’s Bicentennial. Henegan also presented commemorative decrees from President Donald Trump and Governor Henry McMaster, honoring the town.

School District receives $200,000 donation from MEC
Marlboro County Board of Education members voted 7-1 to accept a $200,000 donation from Marlboro Electric Cooperative Inc. at their meeting on Monday.
Vice-chairman Michael Coachman, Jackie Branch, Danny Driggers, Board Chairman Larry McNeil, Macky Norton, Rev. James Smith, and Katherine Manville voted yes.
Nan Fleming abstained from voting. Board Secretary Janice Bright was not at the meeting.

Bulldogs roll by Hartsville, remain unbeaten in region
After a sluggish first quarter, the Marlboro County High boys' basketball team rallied past Hartsville, 65-49 Tuesday night. With the home victory, the Bulldogs remain undefeated in region play and maintain a two-game lead with just four games remaining in the regular season.
"Hartsville is a tough, scrappy team and we withstood and answered their defensive effort. It just shows the maturity of the team and how they have each other’s back on the court," said MCHS head coach LaTroy Brace.

Clio’s First Citizens Bank to close in April
An institution in the town of Clio will soon be no more.
Customers of the First Citizens Bank were alerted by mail last week that the branch in Clio will close its doors permanently on April 21 at 2 p.m.
“This is a real set-back for the town and all the people around Clio,” said Mayor Joe Kinney. “We are very disappointed.”

Between March 12-20, every home in this country will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census.
To encourage residents to respond in the upcoming census, various community leaders, volunteers and others are working to form their own Complete Count Committee for the 2020 census in the county.
Pearlie Lawson, president of the Marlboro County Branch of the NAACP, hoped the community would grow and they would be able to get the word out about how important the census is in 2020.
