'Grow Your Own Future' science day held at Smith Park for sixth graders

Almost 230 Marlboro County sixth graders had a chance for some hands-on learning during the Grow Your Own Future event at Smith Park on Wednesday.
Cheryl Lewis, South Carolina Department of Commerce regional workforce advisor for the Pee Dee, said the main goal of the program was to show students real-life examples of the science teaching standards they have learned about throughout the year.
"This will reinforce the standards learned in the classroom," she said.
Students will be tested on in May as a part of the PASS Test for science. These standards cover topics in plants, animals, energy, weather and overall STEM.
Students from Blenheim Elementary Middle School, Wallace Elementary Middle School, School of Discovery and Marlboro Academy had a chance to rotate between five to seven separate learning sessions, which concentrated on weather/climate; energy transfer/conservation science, animals/plants, and STEM.
Another objective was to introduce different aspects of agriculture to the students and discuss potential careers.
Various business/industry, agency, and post-education representatives shared information with students.
Kevin Jacobs, a meteorologist with WPDE TV 15, shared his passion for weather and climate with students.
"I wanted to use my real life resources - the sun and current weather conditions- to tap into what they are thinking," he said.
He talked about how the weather impacts everyone on a daily basis.
"It is important for kids to know that things done today will have an impact on climate years down the road," he said. 
Erika Jones, 4-H Youth Development agent, discussed the watershed with students.
"All of this is based on hands-on activities learned in school," she said. "It is important to expose kids to STEM."
