McCOLL — The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Bennettsville man following a murder in McColl early Monday morning.
According to Lt. Trevor Murphy at approximately 2:07 a.m. Monday, the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Ellison Club in McColl about gunshots being fired in the parking lot.
Investigators later learned that Donta Vershawn Pearson, 34, was shot in the parking lot and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Pearson, a Laurel Hill native, later died as a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting.
As a result of this homicide investigation, Deaundre Terrell Malachi, 25, was arrested in Bennettsville on Monday following a high-speed chase with law enforcement officers.
He was arrested and charged with murder; possession of a weapon during a violent crime; possession of firearm/ammunition by a person convicted of a violent felony; driving under suspension; littering, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine base (crack).
Malachi is being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center and was arraigned on Wednesday.
