The Bennettsville Police Department wants to remind people of its anonymous tip line.

For more than five years, citizens have been able to call 843-456-7813 and leave anonymous information for department officials.

Assistant Chief Greg Williams said only two people in the department will have access and use the information recorded. Citizens don’t have to give their name or any identifiable information when providing a tip. Williams said this is to allow citizens to provide assistance in helping solve crimes. For instance, there could be a rash of car break-ins in a neighborhood.

Williams said someone may see a suspect. “They may or may not know who they are, but the information that they give, could actually help us find the person or persons who are committing the break-ins,” he said. “I feel that if they’re given that opportunity to use the tip line they will.”

Williams added a lot of things happen in communities where people don’t want to talk to police because they either know the families, or they are afraid to say anything because of who the people are committing the crimes.

“Most people don’t want to talk to the police at the time a crime takes place. They don’t have to tell us who they are if they utilize the tip line. They just give us the information and we’ll go from there,” said Williams.

The Bennettsville Police Department anonymous tip line is 843-456-7813.
