Officials at Marian Wright Edelman Public Library will kick off "Libraries Rock," their summer reading program for youth on Saturday, June 9.
The kick off event is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Bennettsville Community Center.
It will feature pony/train rides, the FX Game Truck, face painting, bounce houses, food, games, health screenings and summer reading signup.
The summer reading program is June 19-July 25. Sign-ups will be June 11-15 at MWE Public Library. No programs will be held the week of July Fourth.
MWE Director Bobbie Grooms said the summer reading program is to promote literacy and prevent “the summer slide.”
The summer slide is when students lose some of the achievement gains during the school year.
"It is one of the best times of the year," she said. "We provide something educational but fun."
Each week, there is a program on Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 9:45 a.m. A bag lunch will be provided at 11 a.m.
Sword of Truth will partner with the Winn Agency to provide the food for youth under the age of 18.
The Tuesday program is for ages 0-7 and features story time with a member of the community attending the event. The Wednesday programs are open to everyone. Performers include June 20, Pork Chop Production; June 27, Science Tellers; July 11, Kritter Keepers; July 18, Yosu Ishido; and July 25, Scooter Hayes.
Also on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. at Marlboro County High School, the MWE staff will partner with Marlboro County 4-H and the school district to provide a program for rising fourth graders.
Kim McLaurin, outreach coordinator at MWE, said each of the programs have STEM-based content relevant to South Carolina standards.
She added the performers always make a connection to reading and reinforces how public libraries have helped them.
The summer reading kick-off and program are funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and the State Library of South Carolina
Other sponsors include Marlboro County government, Marlboro County School District, City of Bennettsville, MWE Friends of the Library, Alpha Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Marlboro County 4-H.
